What is the World Robot Olympiad and Why Does It Matter?

When people hear the word "robotics", they often imagine complicated machines, advanced coding, or something reserved for technology experts. The reality is quite different.

The World Robot Olympiad (WRO) is an international robotics competition that gives young people the opportunity to develop practical skills, solve real-world challenges, and work as part of a team, all whilst having fun.

Each year, thousands of young people from around the world take part in WRO events, designing, building and programming robots to complete challenges inspired by real-world problems and emerging technologies.

More Than Just Robots

Whilst robotics sits at the heart of the competition, WRO is about far more than building machines.

Participants develop skills in:

  • Problem-solving

  • Critical thinking

  • Teamwork

  • Communication

  • Creativity

  • Engineering

  • Coding and programming

  • Project management

  • Resilience

These are skills that are increasingly important in education, employment and everyday life.

Young people learn how to test ideas, overcome setbacks, work collaboratively and improve their solutions through experimentation and persistence.

Categories for Different Interests and Ages

One of the strengths of WRO is that there are multiple ways for young people to participate.

RoboMission

Teams design and programme a robot to complete a series of challenges on a competition field. These missions change every year and often reflect real-world themes such as sustainability, transportation or smart cities.

Future Innovators

Teams identify a real-world problem and develop an innovative solution using technology, engineering and creative thinking. Participants present their ideas and prototypes to a panel of judges.

Future Engineers

Participants design and build autonomous vehicles capable of completing complex tasks and navigating challenging environments.

This variety ensures that students with different interests and strengths can find a category that suits them.

Preparing Young People for the Future

The world is changing rapidly.

Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, automation, robotics and data science are transforming industries and creating new opportunities.

However, technical knowledge alone is not enough.

Employers consistently highlight the importance of skills such as communication, teamwork, creativity and adaptability.

The World Robot Olympiad provides a practical environment where young people can develop both technical and transferable skills through hands-on learning.

Participants gain confidence in their abilities whilst learning how to tackle complex challenges and work effectively with others.

An International Opportunity

WRO is truly a global competition.

Teams that perform well at regional and national events may have the opportunity to represent their country at international competitions, meeting young people from around the world and sharing ideas across cultures.

For many participants, this is their first experience of international competition and can be a life-changing opportunity.

STEMpura and WRO UK

STEMpura is proud to support and deliver World Robot Olympiad opportunities across the UK.

Our mission is to make high-quality STEM experiences accessible to young people regardless of their background, location or previous experience.

Through regional competitions, workshops, training opportunities and community partnerships, we aim to inspire the next generation of engineers, scientists, technologists and innovators.

Whether a young person is taking their first steps into robotics or already has experience building and programming robots, WRO provides an exciting platform to learn, grow and achieve.

Get Involved

If you are a school, educator, parent or organisation interested in taking part in the World Robot Olympiad, we would love to hear from you.

Together, we can help prepare young minds for a changing world.
